Bestival Science Fun

For the second year, we ran a set of demos and artworks in the Tomorrow’s world field at Bestival.  Several thousand people in various states of excitement (chemically assisted and otherwise) rolled up to talk about bees, play a colour-based drum machine and have a go at an invisible wire-loop game.

I built a shy artwork: a video-mapped real-time eco-system in which bugs scuttled around, eating vegetation and predating on each other.  The twist was that the work also featured basic face identification: look directly at it and everything would hide.  Cue visitors sneaking glances from the corners of their eyes, from behind their hands and peeking over the edge of the table.
