Ymana is a mobile interactive work exploring the relationship between climate change and human activity. The piece depicts an inhabited island, surrounded by sea. Each time the piece is loaded on a viewer’s phone, the view changes. Weather and sea conditions vary, animals, fish and birds can be seen moving around. However, each time the piece is viewed, the sea level also rises. Eventually, the island disappears altogether beneath the waves. There is no way for the viewer to stop this from happening.
Ymana is intended as a reflection on the complexity of climate change and the role of human interaction in global heating and sea level rise. By subverting the assumption that a mobile app will be predictable and always available, it invites the viewer to reflect on the finite and precious nature of coastal ecosystems.
